Will I be able to work while receiving chemotherapy treatment?

Home » Cancer Treatment » Will I be able to work while receiving chemotherapy treatment?

Everyone responds to chemotherapy differently. And while many people are able to continue to work, other people experience side effects that keep them from their regular routines. But there’s no real way to predict how you will feel, so it’s important to tentatively plan time off work if you should need it.

Once you’ve experienced a few chemotherapy sessions, you’ll be able to better judge whether or not you’ll be able to continue to work. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Some people schedule their session on Friday as it gives them a few days to recuperate before to returning to work.
  • Adjusting your work hours or arranging to work part-time – at least temporarily – is often helpful because of the fatigue some people experience.
  • The law is on your side: employers are required to be flexible with scheduling during your chemotherapy treatment. Call the American Cancer Society toll free at 1-800-227-2345 to learn more.
